Description

Striking shadows cross the Philae temple complex in Aswan, Egypt. Originally located in the First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt, now moved to Agilkia Island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam. Unlike the ancient pyramids the main sanctuary is a 4th century BCE temple dedicated to Isis, and other structures date to the Ptolemaic Kingdom and Roman times. This photo shows the outer court, or western colonnade – fittingly adorned with palm leaves. Not visible is that surviving parts of the ceiling are decorated with vultures and stars, and reliefs depict the Emperors Claudius, Tiberius and Germanicus. Although Philae is a major tourist attraction in Aswan itself, it is by no means easy to reach. It involves crossing nearly the entirety of Egypt up to its border with Sudan, and a (well-negotiated) boat ride to the island. The journey there is almost as interesting as the site itself.

Photo taken November 2023. Printed on Giclée Hahnemühle Bamboo, a warm-toned paper made from 90% Bamboo fibres and 10% cotton – combining photography with environmental friendliness. It offers good ageing resistance and guarantees high colour density.

This is a limited edition print, of 50 copies. Please note that it is being sold unframed, so you can choose your a frame that matches your own decorating style.
