Photo print of the Shiva shrine at Prambanan temple complex, Java, Indonesia.

Description

This is a view of 9th century CE Prambanan Temple Complex. It is located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, southern Java, Indonesia. The massive Prambanan compound is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia. It would have originally had more than 200 impressive structures. The site is dedicated to the supreme trinity of the universe (Trimurtu), made up of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. The temple seen here is the main shrine, dedicated to Shiva. It is almost 50 metres tall, and its intricate bas-reliefs tell the famous story of Ramayana. Prambanan is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and attracts many tourists from Yogya – but due to the site’s size it is still possible to enjoy some of its wonder in peace.
