Description
Depicted here is are the remaining columns of the temple of Athena, in Priene, modern-day Türkiye. This beautiful ancient Greek site is made up of steep slopes and terraces, overlooking the Aegean coast. Paved streets and stairways have stood the test of time, as well as a bouleuterion (the seat of the city council). The ionic temple of Athena Polias dates to the 4th century BCE, and is said to have been funded by Alexander the Great and designed by famous architect Pytheos. While Priene is not difficult to visit from places like Kuşadası or Selçuk if you arrange a car, few people do – making it one of the hidden archaeological gems of Türkiye.
